Will you get famous if you publish your book?

Will you get famous if you publish your book?

Every writer daydreams about becoming famous. Some people only think about it for the fraction of a second it takes to let the question run through their thoughts. Two seconds later they think, “No, I don’t want that.” or “That will never happen to me.”

Many other authors let this question linger in their minds. It gives them hope. Some dream about being on a talk show promoting their novel. Other’s dream bigger, hitting the best sellers list or watching their characters on the big screen. I have to admit, I’ve pondered this exciting notion.

Which theory is correct? I have to be truthful with all of you. The odds are slim that you will get famous after you publish your book. This is probably disheartening to some readers and I’m sure there are others that are arguing in their minds right now, that I’m mistaken. I’m not wrong, becoming famous is not likely to happen. Yes, there’s the occasional lucky person that has all the planets aligned with the right stars. Consider getting really famous, from writing books, like winning the lottery.

There are over a million books published in a year. Billions of others are rejected. Imagine a million people all shoving their way to a set of grandstands where a select number of publishers sit. Who’s going to get to the front? Will you have the determination to publish your book? After making it to the top, who’s going to have the next hit movie?

Books don’t sell themselves. It takes a lot of hard work on the author’s part to make the story a success. It’s a job being a writer and author. New employees don’t get promotions because they started the job (most the time). This is the same thing, only the really lucky are going to fly to the top. For the rest of us published authors, we are going to have to work our butts off to find recognition.

This is the most important thing to remember. Write because you love it. Write because it’s your passion. Write for yourself.
